THE STORE'S GREAT RESOURCES.
MANY elements contribute to the combined resources of this establishment; many factors render it possible to make these facilities flexible and usable… . To take, in a cursory glance, the important part that location alone plays and the immense area that the store covers. Possibly at the most famous corner of New York, certainly on the most famous avenue in the world, it extends from street to street, and from avenue to avenue, a city square block, 420 feet long, 200 feet wide, a total area of, approximately, 84,000 square feet, rising on the Fifth Avenue side eight and a half stories above street level, and on the Madison Avenue side thirteen stories… .
HERE the flood-tide of metropolitan shopping may be observed against a back-ground which expresses in every note the most modern achievements in architectural and engineering science… . Space, ventilation, light, heat, the physical requirements under the control of machinery which supplies the store with motor power; such features as a conveyor system with canvas-belted traveling platforms leading direct to the great packing rooms, with outlet to the delivery system embracing Greater New York and its environs; an artificial refrigerating plant, with cork-sheathed vaults, covering a huge area, for the safeguarding of furs, draperies and rugs; workrooms where hundreds of expert craftsmen are daily employed, the most improved processes in use—these are but a few of the physical features which it has been no easy task to evolve, no easy task to keep in constant operation… .
THE greater and more intricate task lies in the constant assembling of merchandise from all parts of the world—merchandise befitting so spacious and splendid a background. This task has resulted in filling all of the great selling floors of the store with assortments of compelling beauty and fascinating interest… extensive, and of a vast completeness and variety… .
AND it will be readily seen that when selection is so ample a Catalogue of limited proportion can portray, comparatively speaking, only a small representation from each department. But every effort has been made in this enlarged edition to present so much that is charming in the mode, so much that is decorative and utilitarian in the home, that it should prove a helpful shopping medium… .
AS an adjunct to the Catalogue, there is the Mail Shopping Bureau, with its large staff of experienced shoppers, schooled in the store's resources, and who will make any selection desired, whether pictured in the Catalogue or to be found elsewhere in the store's assortments. There is, in addition to this service, the Correspondence Department, whose special province it is to answer any inquiry relating to individual shopping requirements, to solve the most vexatious problem, and to give any desired information on matters of dress which the Catalogue may not supply… .
IT is these resources which B. Altman & Co. consider worthy of the continued confidence of their patrons throughout America, in the Spanish-speaking countries as well as in foreign territories.
